Chelsea POP to Re-deploy Fall 2021!

On September 6, 2021 Chelsea City Council unanimously approved to re-deploy the Chelsea POP demonstration project throughout the month of October. Building on the success of last year’s project, residents will see temporary, low-cost street improvements popping up on more neighborhood streets including W. and E. MIddle Street., S. East Street, Washington Street and Madison Street. Treatments chosen during a public input period this summer included shared lane markings, medians, striped parking, weighted pedestrian cones, removable speed cushions, and wayfinding signs. These improvements are aimed at slowing traffic and increasing safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The City of Chelsea will be collecting feedback through an online survey to determine what improvements should be made permanent.

Chelsea POP to include Wave Bike Lane delineators along N. Freer Road in Spring 2022!

The City of Chelsea will partner with the League of Michigan Bicyclists to install trial Bike lane delineators along N. Freer Road. Under LMB’s BikeWave program, made possible by a grant provided by AARP, the City of Chelsea will test the efficacy of these lanes and have the opportunity to implement permanent separators if the trial period proves successful. The intention behind the BikeWave initiative is to make bike lanes safer for the “average biker” as a way to encourage biking for commuting and recreation. For more information on the BikeWave initiative, visit lmb.org/bikewave.

Thank you to the League of Michigan Bicyclists and AARP for Selecting the City of Chelsea to Pilot the Wave bike lane delineators!

What is Chelsea POP?

The City of Chelsea partnered with WATS on a tactical urbanism demonstration project along the Freer Rd, Railroad St, McKinley and Dewey St. Corridor in 2020. The Chelsea POP project was a low-cost 30-day demonstration project to test out traffic calming treatments that increased comfort and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Community engagement was used to help identify treatments used in the project, which included enhanced crosswalks, bike lanes, shared road markings, painted curb extensions, striped parking, and wayfinding signs. Thank you to the City of Chelsea’s DPW team for all their assistance deploying the project elements for Chelsea POP.

Thank you to our friends at SEMCOG for this video of the Chelsea POP project.

Dexter-Chelsea and Freer Road Safety Audit

The City of Chelsea commissioned WSP for an evaluation of the intersection of Dexter-Chelsea Rd. at Freer Rd. A Road Safety Audit is a formal safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection by an independent, multi-disciplinary RSA team. The Chelsea Pop project team acknowledge the challenge of this intersection and due to its complexity, chose not to include this as part of the scope of the Chelsea Pop project.

The final road safety audit presentation is provided here for information to the public. Road Safety Audit Presentation
