2021 Crash Report Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Severity Highlight

WATS has released its 2021 Crash Report. Below are a few charts we would like to showcase, which illustrate overall crash severity, pedestrian crash severity, and bicycle crash severity. This is a presentation of data, not a safety plan, and is provided as information about crash data from 2021 for Washtenaw County. We feel these charts are important, as they highlight non-motorized crashes in the county

Crash Report Chart 1: Crash Severity for Washtenaw County

Chart 1 shows the severity of ALL crash types in Washtenaw County for 2021. 82.1% of crashes were “No Injury”, 8.8% “Possible Injury”, 7.4% “Minor Injury”, 1.36% Serious Injury, and .32% “Fatal Injury”.

Crash Report Chart 6: Crashes Involving Pedestrians by Severity for Washtenaw County

Chart 6 shows the severity for Pedestrian crashes for Washtenaw County for 2021. 40.5% of crashes were “Minor Injury'', 32.9% “Possible Injury”, 15.2% “Serious Injury”, 7.6% “No Injury”, and 3.8% “Fatal Injury”.

Crash Report Chart 7: Crashes Involving Bicyclists by Severity for Washtenaw County

Chart 7 shows the severity of injury for Bicyclists crashes for Washtenaw County for 2021. 50% of crashes were “Minor Injury”, 22.6% “Possible Injury”, 19.4% “No Injury”, 6.5% “Serious Injury”, and 1.5% “Fatal Injury”.

Comparing the charts: 

Comparing pedestrian and bicycle crashes to all crashes, pedestrian and bicycle crashes are only 1.6% of the total of all crashes. However, pedestrian and bicycle fatal and serious injury crashes make up 13.7% of the total of all fatal and serious injury crashes.
